The Fiji Rugby Union last week donated their Flood Appeal cheque to Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama which will go towards the PM’s Flood Relief Fund.
$15,000 was raised at the Fiji Rugby Union’s Flood Appeal Charity auction which was held at the Novotel Hotel in Nadi in June.
The charity auction was held in conjunction with the after match function for the Fiji vs Scotland test match. Prizes and memorabilia items from Rugby World Cup 2011 such as personalized team jerseys, rugby balls and player’s items was donated by FRU, sponsors and the Scotland Rugby Team for auction.
Mr Bainimarama was one of the successful bidders and won a Scotch Whiskey specially named “The Famous Fijian” kindly donated by the Scottish Rugby Union.
In receiving the cheque the Prime Minister said “we are grateful for the considerable donation and it is very kind indeed for the Fiji Rugby Union to assist those affected by the floods”.
FRU CEO Manasa Baravilala in presenting the cheque said that “we are truly blessed as a nation when rugby is used as a vehicle to assist those in need.” The Fiji-Scotland Test brought together players and officials from two great rugby nations in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere to raise funds for those devastated by the floods in March earlier this year.
He also added that “The Flying Fijians have been without a sponsor for sometime but it has not dampened our spirits from sowing into these communities as the harvest will come. We will never know but these communities may just produce the next Flying Fijian”.
