Australia Gears up for Fiji Water Int. Centennial 7s Underline 27 August, 2013

The Australian 7s Rugby team are looking forward to competing in the Fiji Water International Centennial 7s in October in what they say promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament.

Luca Liussi the Manager for the Australian 7s Men's Team says that they are very happy that they were invited to play in the Fiji Water International Centennial 7s tournament.

“We are very excited to be part of the Fiji International Centennial 7s tournament because we are also working towards the first leg of the IRB Series on the Gold Coast.”

“The Fiji Water International 7s tournament will be a great opportunity for us to look at players before we finalise our selection.”

This will be the first time for the ARU 7s team to play in the Fiji Water International Centennial 7s tournament and Liussi says there is no other better place to learn.

“Fiji is always a great place to learn the game of 7s. It is the spiritual home of 7s and the whole country understands the game.”

“It would be fantastic for Fiji to be an addition to the 7s World Series because it is Fiji’s national sport and it would be fitting for Fiji to have a tournament.”

Apart from preparing for the 2013/2014 IRB World 7s series, the Australians have one other mission on their mind.

“We hope to win the tournament! Playing Fijian teams in Fiji is possibly as hard as beating them in Hong Kong! They love to win at home!”

“Fiji is a fantastic place to visit. Teams are often lulled into a false sense of security with the friendly people, big smiles and warm handshakes. When you are out on the Rugby Field, Fijians are fierce competitors and we must be aware of this.”

“The competition looks to be shaping up with some very strong International Teams. We are excited and grateful to be invited.”

Australian Men’s Sevens coach Michael O’Connor will coach the team to the Fiji Water International Centennial 7s but he is yet to select the team.

“The team will not be named until we are sure who is available. We need to look at some of our players returning from injury after the 7s Rugby World Cup and these players need a good test before the start of the IRB Series.”

The Fiji Water International Centennial 7s will be on 4 and 5 October at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
